Volunteers Going Above and Beyond

This year, Age Concern Wellington Region introduced the ‘Outstanding Volunteer Award’, designed to recognise and appreciate Age Concern’s volunteers who go the extra mile for seniors.

Two volunteer Christmas parties were held at the end of November, in Stokes Valley and Johnsonville. Three amazing recipients were presented with awards at these events – Joan Robertshawe, Carol Bradnock and Allan Johnson.

“All three recipients of our Outstanding Volunteer Award are incredible examples of the personal commitment all our volunteers make to help us reach isolated and lonely seniors,” CEO Stephen Opie said. “But Joan, Allan and Carol also go above and beyond the call of duty every week – they give so much of their time that we wanted to recognise this publicly. They are a shining example of kindness.”

Joan Robertshawe has been volunteering with Age Concern for over two years. She is fantastic at getting people to fill up classes, like Steady As You Go classes and Staying Safe driving courses. Frequently, there is a demand for more classes because Joan fills them up so quickly!

“I feel very privileged and pleasantly surprised,” Joan said on receiving the award. “This beautiful gift is a symbol of Age Concern’s appreciation for their volunteers.”

Carol Bradnock has a very busy schedule, full of volunteering at several different organisations. She began volunteering with Age Concern in 2019, and loves making a difference in people’s lives. Carol was surprised by the attention of the award as she is just happy to help.

“I get a kick out of volunteering,” she said.

Allan Johnson has been volunteering with Age Concern for years. He visits someone and is also a companion walker. He runs the monthly pop-up hub for seniors at the Linden Community Centre with another volunteer.

“I feel very humble to be given this award. I know there are 250 other volunteers that put their upmost into Age Concern’s work,” Allan said. He enjoys volunteering and gets satisfaction from knowing the people he visits truly appreciate his help.

Age Concern is very thankful for all service volunteers and their work this year. Each one deserves an award!
