Meeting Change – The New Zealand Red Meat Story 1997 to 2022, co-authored by Ali Spencer and Mick Calder, was officially launched at Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington recently.
Mick, our Age Concern Wellington Region (ACWR) office volunteer, worked for the NZ Meat Producers Board and its affiliated organisations for 42 years. He previously co-authored Meat Acts which covered the Board’s history from 1972 to 1997.
The book was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the NZ Meat Board. It makes for compelling reading and shows the many reasons New Zealanders have to celebrate our red meat sector, said Andrew Morrison, chair of NZ Meat Board and Beef + Lamb NZ Ltd, at the launch.
In the last few weeks, Mick has talked to attendees at Age Concern community hubs, giving them a potted history of the NZ meat industry ranging from the first shipment of mutton and lamb to the UK in 1882 to the present day. The industry generates $10 billion in export earnings these days. The talk has been well received, and one of the people in attendance said it was the most interesting talk he’d heard at the hub.
The 404-page full-colour book is full of facts and includes well over 180 photographs illustrations. Paperback NZ$49.99, plus P&P. The book is available for order via https://meetingchange.nz, or via
